Behind the Scenes: The 66th Grammys

This past weekend, I attended the #GRAMMYs for the first time. While the awards ceremony is televised nationally, what many of us don't see are the many industry events leading up to it.

The Saturday before the awards ceremony, I was invited to the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Industry Gathering, attended by recording music artists, producers, creatives, and professionals from the entertainment and music industry. While intimidated to be attending a mixer event and be in a room with such amazing talent, what I soon realized was that it wasn't very different from previous events I’ve attended with clients and media as a PR professional.

Working with Walt & Company, I’ve been a part of all the behind-the-scenes planning and work that goes into hosting media tours and press conferences and prepping for tradeshows and partner events. Speaking with the organizer of the AAPI Industry Gathering, I resonated with the efforts that went into putting on the mixer.

Whether for the tech industry or music and entertainment industry, the attributes for being a great host are similar. Here are a few takeaways:

1. Know your guests – do some research beforehand and learn about who will be attending if you don't know them already. You will be able to recognize and greet them when they arrive, which will make them feel welcomed. You may also learn an interesting fact about them that could be a great conversation starter.

2. Provide an accommodating venue – find a place that's within reasonable distance for attendees. It should be easy to get to transportation-wise and easy to find. The venue should also make room for conversations/messaging to be heard and/or seen. Snacks, food, or refreshments are a plus in my book. 😋 And, tchotchkes can be provided as something to remember the event.

3. Connect – find ways to stay in touch following the event. Exchange business cards or connect on social platforms and send a follow-up. Staying apprised on future projects and finding ways to possibly help/contribute can make for a lasting relationship.

From visiting the GRAMMY Museum to attending the networking event, the premiere and broadcast ceremonies, and the after party, GRAMMY weekend was an amazing experience! One of my favorite parts was hearing some of the winners thank their PR teams in their acceptance speeches. 😉
